Mike Sexton was the 7th coach in Tuscola football history. He came to Tuscola from East Henderson High School where he had some success in the early 2000's. After getting off to an 0-3 start in his first year as head coach (2005), Sexton helped rally his team back to finish 3rd in the Mountain Athletic Conference with a 4-2 conference record (6-6 overall). The 2005 team also advanced to the 2nd round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs where they fell by only a touchdown to the defending 2A and eventual 3A State Champion Charlotte Catholic Cougars. While the Mountaineers improved drastically throughout 2005, things unfortunately didn't turn out as planned in 2006. The Mountaineers got off to an 0-7 start and finished 2-9 (the worst start and record in Tuscola football history). The Mountaineers got their two wins of the season against North Buncombe and T.C. Roberson- both off the foot of kicker Leo Gamez. During this season, Sexton chose to play some young freshmen and sophomores who would later grow into Tuscola football legends. He is often credited with planting a seed in these young players that eventually grew into something special. Perhaps two of his greater moments at Tuscola include the classic consecutive upsets of T.C. Roberson in 2005 & 2006. The 2005 upset of the defending MAC Champion secured the 3rd place spot in the MAC and a playoff berth, while the very unlikely 2006 upset sent Tuscola's seniors out with a win. Tuscola chose to go a different direction after 2006 and Sexton was hired as an assistant coach at Erwin High School in 2007, where he was later promoted to his current job as Head Coach.
