Coach's Biography...

Cliff Brookshire served as the first head coach of Tuscola High School from 1966 through 1969. He was a native of Buncombe County and graduated from Wake Forest in 1955. Brookshire was an assistant coach at Canton High School for four years before getting his first head coaching job at Charles D. Owen High School.  After  his time at Owen, Brookshire was hired as the head coach of Brevard High School where he compiled a 60-13 record and a 3A State Championship Title. He was also selected as an assistant coach for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in 1962 and 1963. In his 4 years of coaching the Mountaineers, Brookshire won 24 games, lost 14, and tied once (Finishing with a .628 winning percentage). Perhaps his greatest moment at Tuscola was a November 4, 1966 upset of the previously undefeated Sylva-Webster Golden Eagles. Though it looked as if Tuscola would start it's football tradition off with a losing season, this unlikely victory led Tuscola to a winning season (5-4). This achivement sparked a streak in which the Mountaineers stayed at or above .500 for 32 years. Brookshire resigned from Tuscola prior to the 1970 season to take a coaching job with the Enka Jets.  During his career, Brookshire served 4 years on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors. He eventually left coaching to pursue business interests. In 2002, Brookshire was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame. He now lives in Brevard, NC.
