Tuscola High School was started on August 29th, 1966 on a hill located on the banks of Lake Junaluska in Waynesville, NC. In an effort to continue the winning football tradition of the previous Waynesville Township High School, Tuscola's first head coach Cliff Brookshire worked the Mountaineers hard. Tuscola's first season was not their most impressive, but nevertheless a winning season as they ended up with 5 wins and 4 losses. Throughout Brooksire's 4 year tenure on the hill, Tuscola won 24 games, lost 14 games, and tied once.
