2008 TUSCOLA MOUNTAINEERS

MAC CO-CHAMPIONS

In August 2008, the Tuscola Mountaineers came into the season with winning on their mind.  Now it's late November, and the Mountaineers finished this special season with 11 wins- putting them in an elite category of Tuscola football history that only 2 teams before them had accomplished (1972, 1995).  Along with the 11 wins, Tuscola's 2008 team finished undefeated on the road, undefeated in non-conference games, holds the third best winning percentage in school history (.846), and earned the school's first conference championship since 1997.  Without question, the 2008 Mountaineers will be one of the most remembered to ever play in Waynesville.

As a wintry mix fell on Saturday night, the 2008 Tuscola Mountaineers were looking to bounce back from a dissapointing end to the regular season and get things back on track.  They did just that.  Tuscola's last playoff victory was a 2005 win at Sun Valley- and their last home playoff game was a 2004 win over Hunter Huss.  Well, four years later- Huss came back and Tuscola beat them again.  With the win, Tuscola gets to the 11 win mark for the 3rd time in school history (1972, 1995, 2008).  Key performances in the game included Tyler Brosius passing for 231 yards and 1 touchdown that gave him sole posession of the school record for career touchdown passes, as well as Josh Adams' 202 yard rushing performance.  The Mountaineers will host Asheville next week for a rematch between the two Mountain Athletic Conference co-champions.

TUSCOLA SHARES

2008 MAC TITLE

WITH ASHEVILLE

The 2008 Tuscola Mountaineers are without question Mountain Athetic Conference champions, but will now have to share that title with the Asheville Cougars due to Tuscola's loss to Roberson and Asheville's win over North Buncombe.  Roberson ended Tuscola's hopes of an undefeated season on Friday night, but the Mountaineers have still had a very exciting regular season and are looking forward to the first round of the playoffs on November 14th.  Information on seeding and opponents will be posted as soon as possible.

The Tuscola Mountaineers clinched at least a share of their first conference title since 1997 on Friday night with a win over the Enka Jets.  The Mountaineers are 5-0 in the conference and can hold the title outright with a win over the T.C. The 2008 Junior Varsity football team defeated Enka 42-6 on Thursday night at C.E. Weatherby Stadium, sweeping a 2 game series against the Jets.  The teams first met a few weeks ago in a non-conference matchup to make up for Franklin- who does not field a JV team.  This game however, does count towards the conference record.  Tuscola struck first in the game when Dustin Messer ran 10 yards into the endzone with 6:41 left in the first quarter.  The Mountaineers scored twice in the second quarter- first with a 17 yard touchdown pass from Rob Howard to Zack Adams, then again with a 1 yard touchdown run by Howard.  The Mountaineers led 21-0 at the half, and came out with a bang after the break when Weaver Kirkpatrick returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.  Tuscola's special teams continued to shine as Kirkpatrick also returned an Enka punt 85 yards for another touchdown with 6:36 left in the 3rd.  Tuscola would score again in the third quarter- this time with a defensive touchdown as Rob Howard returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown.  None of Tuscola's 2nd half touchdowns were scored on offense, but Enka managed to punch into the endzone with 0 seconds left on the 3rd quarter clock, reducing the score to 42-6 after a failed extra point attempt.  The Mountaineers will face the T.C. Roberson Rams next Thursday in a game that will decide the Junior Varsity conference championship.

The Tuscola Mountaineers ended a 13 game losing streak to Asheville on Friday night as they defeated the Cougars in an impressive 34-13 win.  The Mountaineers stepped up as a team following the injury of leading tackler Joe Kiker last week and held a speedy Asheville team to only 13 points, while putting up 34 of their own with outstanding performances by Tyler Brosius, Josh Adams, Eddie Braun, Lane Hambrick, and Leo Gamez just to name a few.  The win gives Tuscola sole posession of first place in the Mountain Athletic Conference and improves the team record to 9-0 for the second time in school history.  The Mountaineers can clinch at least a share of the conference title with a win over Enka this coming Friday, and can claim it outright if they beat T.C. Roberson on November 7th.

The 2008 Junior Varsity football team improved to 6-1 on the season Thursday night with a 42-12 win over the North Buncombe Black Hawks.  The Mountaineers dominated the first half, scoring first on a 70 yard touchdown pass from Rob Howard to Weaver Kirkpatrick.  With the PAT good, Tuscola took a 7-0 lead with 8:22 left in the 1st.  Tuscola then scored again with 2:37 left in the 1st on a 23 yard touchdown run by Rob Howard, giving Tuscola a 14-0 lead after the PAT.  In the second quarter, Rob Howard and Weaver Kirkpatrick connected yet again on a 44 yard touchdown pass, and Tuscola took a 20-0 lead after a missed PAT.  The Mountaineers scored once again before the half as Dustin Messer got in the endzone on a 3 yard touchdown run with 1:26 left on the second quarter clock.  Following the touchdown, Tuscola successfully attempted a 2 point conversion as Rob Howard connected with Cameron Cannon in the endzone.  After the break, Tuscola kept things going when Dustin Messer ran 6 yards into the endzone- giving the Mountaineers a 35-0 lead after the PAT.  North Buncombe got their first points of the game on a 7 yard touchdown run with 3:50 left in the third.  After a failed PAT, the Black Hawks cut the score to 35-6, but Tuscola wasn't finished.  With less than 2 minutes left in the 3rd, Rob Howard connected with Weaver Kirkpatrick on a 50 yard touchdown pass that landed Tuscola at the North Buncombe 6 yard line.  Dustin Messer then finished the job with a 6 yard touchdown run, giving the Mountaineers a 42-6 lead after the PAT.  North Buncombe would go on to shut Tuscola out in the 4th quarter after a Mountaineer drive was ended by a fumble in the endzone that resulted in a touchback for the Black Hawks.  North Buncombe, however scored on a passing play with 7:27 left in the 4th- cutting the final score to 42-12.

(09/30/2008 AP POLL)

Tuscola has jumped 2 spots from last week's #9 in the Associated Press poll.  In the September 30th poll, Tuscola is ranked the #7 Class 3A Team in the state of North Carolina.  The jump comes just 4 days after a 29-14 win over the Erwin Warriors.  The highly respected NCPreps.com Baker's Dozen poll has not yet been released as a result of weather delays across the state forcing games to be played on Monday night in many areas and Wednesday night in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.  Tuscola was ranked #6 in last week's edition of the Baker's Dozen.

Coming off of 2 big wins over Pisgah and A.C. Reynolds, the Tuscola Mountaineers had to get up once again to face another good mountain team in the Erwin Warriors.  Last year, Tuscola lost to Erwin in overtime 20-17.  Prior to Friday night, Tuscola's last win over the Warriors had been in 2005 under former coach Mike Sexton.  This time, Tuscola defeated Erwin with Sexton coaching the Warriors instead.  The Mountaineers started off a little flat, and went into the locker room at halftime with only a 6-0 lead.  At one point in the 3rd quarter, the Warriors even took a 7-6 lead.  However, the Mountaineers proved to be too much for Erwin to handle when Tuscola scored 23 second half points and had 5 takeaways to beat the Warriors 29-14, improving to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Mountaineers will travel to Sylva next week to play their last non-conference opponent of the season- the Smoky Mountain Mustangs.

The Tuscola JV Football team defeated the Erwin Warriors on Thursday night in an impressive 46-13 win.  Tuscola got things rolling early, scoring 21 points in the first quarter.  Dustin Messer scored first, then freshman QB Rob Howard scored on a 65 yard touchdown run followed by a 3 yard pass from Howard to Johnston.  With 8:16 left in the 2nd quarter, Weaver Kirkpatrick then returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown.  Messer and Howard continued to impress in the 3rd quarter with Messer's 1 yard touchdown run and Howard's 69 yard touchdown run.  With 3:02 left in the 4th quarter, the Mountaineers scored one last time with a 43 yard TD run by Conner.  On the defensive side of the ball, Michael Stroupe had a great night that included a blocked punt and a fumble recovery.

Ranked at last!

The Tuscola Mountaineers have now broken the class 3A top 10 in both the Associated Press Poll and the NCPreps.com Baker's Dozen Poll after an impressive 17-14 win over the AC Reynolds Rockets.  In the Baker's Dozen, Tuscola ranks 6th in the state, while the Associated Press poll ranks the Mountaineers as 9th.  Tuscola has also made ripples in Drew Pasteur's Fantastic 50, with the computerized ranking system placing the Mountaineers 5th in the 3A rankings and 16th overall.  In the Sunday edition of the Asheville Citizen-Times' "Best of the West", Tuscola was ranked the #1 team in the Mountains.  While high rankings can boost confidence, they have no real impact on games- which is why Coach Kiefer is determined to keep his team focused on one opponent at a time without overlooking anyone.

The Tuscola Mountaineers shocked the A.C. Reynolds rockets on Friday night 17-14 in what could have been Tuscola's biggest win of the last decade.  Only one year ago, the Rockets beat Tuscola 53-7, but the Mountaineers showed their maturity by leaving last year in the past and playing their best against an A.C. Reynolds team that was thought by many to be the best in the Mountains. In the win, junior quarterback Tyler Brosius threw for a school record 316 yards- the most yards passing by any quarterback in Western North Carolina for week 5. With the win, Tuscola has turned many heads and is now #1 in this week's Asheville Citizen-Times "Best of the West" rankings.  Be sure to watch our post-game interview with Coach Kiefer and stay tuned for the 2008 Reynolds @ Tuscola Highlight Reel.

1972

STATE CHAMPIONS

REMEMBERED

On December 1st, 1972, the Tuscola Mountaineers hosted the Sanford Bulldogs at C.E. Weatherby Stadium in the Mountaineers' first and only State Championship game (since the consolidation in 1966).  The game ended in a 14-14 tie, without overtime.  As a result, both teams shared the State Title.  Coincidentally, the Mountaineers also tied another state championshp team that year with a 14-14 score: the Sylva-Webster Golden Eagles... meaning  both Tuscola's first and last games of the season were both 14-14 ties against state championship teams. The 1972 team, coaches, and cheerleaders will be honored tonight at C.E. Weatherby Stadium before the matchup against the A.C. Reynolds Rockets.

The Tuscola Mountaineers improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2004 season with a 49-28 win over Brevard on August 29, 2008 at C.E. Weatherby Stadium in Waynesville.  This victory is also marks Tuscola's first win over the Blue Devils since the Noland era, and is the Mountaineers' highest scoring game since a November 9, 2001 win over North Buncombe.  Though Tyler Brosius passed for 116 yards and Josh Adams rushed for 102 yards in a solid victory, the Mountaineers were not without mistakes.  Turnovers caused a few problems for Tuscola, especially those lost in the red zone.  However, the Mountaineers showed their increase in maturity by keeping the momentum in their favor and not giving up.  Tuscola finished the game right with three unanswered touchdowns to earn a 21 point victory after being tied with Brevard at 28 in the 3rd quarter.

The Tuscola Mountaineers got the 2008 season off to a great start with an impressive 36-7 win over a quality East Henderson team.  The offense did well tonight, showing strength in the running game. The defense also showed up well and was able to stop the speedy Michael Robinson and talented Chase Hill.  Be sure to check out the highlight reel and interview with Coach Kiefer in the video section of TuscolaFootball.com

TUSCOLA WILL HOST

EAST HENDERSON IN

2008 SEASON OPENER

Tuscola will host future conference rival East Henderson at C.E. Weatherby Stadium on Friday for it's season opener, and all time regular season debut on the new artificial turf.  With both teams reloaded with plenty of talent, both are expected to be contenders for their conference titles this season. Tuscola and East Henderson played in a heated battle in East Flat Rock one year ago- a game the Mountaineers won by a 3 point margin.  In the final minutes, Eagles quarterback Chase Hill threw what seemed to be a touchdown pass, but the game was saved for Tuscola when the pass was called back because Hill was standing past the line of scrimmage when the pass was thrown.  Tuscola returns talented junior quarterback Tyler Brosius, and weapons such as Sage Frady, Brody Meford, Dakota Brown, Corey Sweeny, and Josh Adams just to name a few.  East Henderson returns players such as quarterback Chase Hill and the speedy, talented Michael Robinson.   Be at C.E. Weatherby Stadium Friday night for some guaranteed Week 1 excitement!

TUSCOLA PLAYS WELL

IN RECENT SCRIMMAGES

The Tuscola Mountaineers have played well in recent scrimmages against North Henderson, Polk County, and Union Pines.  The Mountaineers played North Henderson and Polk on Tuesday Night at a scrimmage hosted by the Wolverines.  In the scrimmage, Tuscola got a taste of 2 future opponents.  North Henderson will be a part of the new 2A/3A split Western Athletic Conference with Tuscola from 2009-2013, and Polk will appear on the Mountaineers' schedule as a non-conference opponent for at least the next two years.  In the scrimmage vs. North Henderson, Tuscola scored 2 touchdowns and kept North Henderson from scoring at all.  In the scrimmage against Polk, the Mountaineers and Wolverines scored two touchdowns each.  On Thursday Morning, the Mountaineers hosted Union Pines in a 10:00 AM scrimmage at C.E. Weatherby Stadium.  In the game-style competition, the Mountaineers outscored Union Pines approximately 6 touchdowns to 1.  The Mountaineers also scored 6 touchdowns in the 10 play segment.

BROSIUS LEADS AIR RAID

West Forsyth High School, a Class 4-AA school from Clemmons, brought more than 100 players to participate in Saturday afternoon’s 7-on-7 passing scrimmage against the 40-man Tuscola squad at Weatherby Stadium. Talk about David versus Goliath- but in this case, Goliath was the Tuscola Mountaineers and their prolific passing attack, which should be called the Mountaineers’ Air Raid Offense after Saturday’s performance.  Click Here to read more at TheMountaineer.com (Story- Dennis Smathers, Tuscola Beat Writer for "The Mountaineer")

Stadium Renovations

Near Completion

The stadium renovations at C.E. Weatherby Stadium are nearing completion!  Projects that are now finished include the installation of artificial turf, a new LED light scoreboard, and a black and gold block base to the home stands.  Projects still underway include leveling and paving behind each endzone for more walking space and better, up against the field viewing for those who wish to stand.  The field house behind the home stands is also getting a fresh coat of paint, and the bricks ordered by former football players will be installed.  All renovations are expected to be complete before the border bash on August 15.

Brosius Invited to

University of Florida Camp

The season hasn't even started, yet Tuscola junior quarterback Tyler Brosius can add yet another honor to his name.  Brosius first turned heads in the last game of the 2006 season when he was put in to replace the starter.  On that night, Brosius- then a freshman led the Mountaineers to upset the heavily favored T.C. Roberson Rams.  Brosius continued to improve throughout the 2007 season as a sophomore and has impressed scouts and Division I BCS schools through his highlights and outstanding performances at camps.  The University of Florida is now showing their interest by inviting Brosius to their "Friday Night Lights" camp on July 18 where he will show his potential to head coach Urban Meyer and others on the Gator coaching staff.
