"We are very proud of the effort and performance of our young men this year on both the JV (Conf. Runner-up) and Varsity teams. Granted we did not accomplish all that we had hoped but we are excited about the great things this team did accomplish and we look forward to the coming years as we will continue to improve and get Tuscola football back to contender status."
- Head Coach Donnie Kiefer

"We got beat in so many areas tonight," Mountaineers coach Donnie Kiefer said. "I don't see anybody challenging Asheville early in the (NCHSAA) playoffs, I really don't. That's a good football team with a lot of weapons. They beat us upfront and just had too many athletes for us to deal with." Click here to read more at Citizen-Times.com (Story- Andrew Pearson)

Motivational themes vary from one high school football team to the next. Opponents don’t need a mole inside Tuscola’s locker room to learn how the Mountaineers prepare themselves each week. ”What we say every day is that we want every game to feel just like the Pisgah game,“ Tuscola quarterback Tyler Brosius said. ”We want to be pumped up for everyone.“ The Mountaineers (4-3, 1-1), will apply that mindset again when they host North Buncombe (6-2, 2-1) Friday in a key Mountain Athletic Conference game between two surprising teams. If efforts counted, the Tuscola varsity football team would have been the winner because the Mountaineers left it all on the field against visiting Erwin Friday night at C.E. Weatherby Stadium. Unfortunately for Tuscola, effort doesn't count as much as the final numbers on the scoreboard as the Mountaineers suffered a gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, 20-17, overtime loss to the Warriors in the Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams. A Tuscola Mountaineer team who's offense has been hurt by injuries tried their best to win in what turned out to be a defensive showdown vs. Erwin. The Mountaineers managed to send the game into overtime, but came up short. Erwin head coach Chris Brookshire was a 1988 graduate of Tuscola High School and is the son of legendary Mountaineer coach Cliff Brookshire.

Anyone wondering if Reynolds would stick with the spread offense in Friday night’s nonconference game against Tuscola didn’t have to wait long to find out. After struggling with the new open-field offense through three games to start the season, the Rockets scored touchdowns on consecutive big plays early in the first quarter and never trailed. The Tuscola Mountaineers varsity football team had an overdue account of 365 days to settle with its arch-rival the Pisgah Black Bears. On Friday night at C.E.Weatherby Stadium in front of a standing room only crowd in the 44th meeting of the County Clash, Tuscola paid off the account with a dominating, old fashioned whipping on the previously unbeaten Black Bears, 22-6. Back in January, Donnie Kiefer left behind a conference championship contender for moribund Tuscola. People in and around Waynesville now understand why the coach’s resignation from East Cartaret was such a boon for the Mountaineers. Outfitted in black uniforms and helmets, Tuscola’s players matched their wins total from a miserable 2006 season (two) by downing Pisgah, 22-6. Just like last season, the battle of Haywood County was almost entirely one-sided. Only this time, the winning side hailed from the western half of the county. Tuscola’s front line steamrolled archrival Pisgah all night in front of a jam-packed C.E. Weatherby Stadium as the Mountaineers pounded out a 22-6 victory, their first win over the Bears since 2004. TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE FOR THS VS. PHS GAME
Balsam Drive will be closed after the Tuscola vs. Pisgah game and all of the reserved parking traffic will be required to turn right, toward South Main Street. Also, those parked on the visitors side of the stadium must continue on Brown Avenue after the game and will not be allowed to turn onto Balsam Drive.

The Tuscola Booster Club will be offering $1 football programs at all of the home games this season. The program has been significantly scaled down, as the old program was not generating profits. The new program will still feature rosters, pictures, and other information about the team but will not have as much advertising. The simplicity of the new program will make it easier for fans to afford and will help save the team money.

The Tuscola Tailgaters would like to announce that they will be tailgating before the Tuscola vs. Pisgah rivalry game on Friday, complete with bear meat! Tuscola High School turns 41 years old today! The school opened on August 29, 1966 and the first football team went 5-4 under head coach Cliff Brookshire and quarterback Dale Henry. In order to secure the winning season (and prevent a losing one), the Mountaineers upset the undefeated Sylva Golden Eagles in the final game of the season. TuscolaFootball.com has put together a 1966 special with photos, stats, and more from the 1966 season. Click here for an important piece of Tuscola Football history.
